Hydrogen Ecosystem - Huge promises, little realization and way forward

21 Oct 2025
Hydrogen Leadership Summit

Overview on hydrogen projects announcements and realization compared to targets

Only c. 2-3% of announced projects have been pursued to FID and beyond; lots of projects canceled or postponed; the European and German targets can hardly be achieved (would require growth of 500-2000% within 5 years

Impact on electrolyzer manufacturers

Electrolyzer manufacturers have heavily invested in production capacities of several GW per year but only MW are being ordered; this leads to overcapacity and financial issues of the OEM up to insolvencies (eg. HydrogenPro, GreenHydrogenSystems)

Rising competition from China

On the other hand, chinese OEM are offering products at between 50 and 20% of the price of European / western manufactuers, are heavily investing into that market and might become a severe competition for western OEM not so much in Germany or Europe (due to current globale trade climate) but for MidEast, NorthAfrica, APAC wich might become the dominant production regions for clean H2 (esp. Towards Ammonia, emethanol, efuels)

Latest development (projects, infrastructure, regulation)

Here I will give an overview what is currently happening in the market, in terms of projects, infrastructure, offtake, funding etc.

Required actions to ramp up developments and move towards targets

Here the latest regulatory developments and foreseeable changes will be presented as eg the impact of clean industry deal, "Wasserstoffbeschleuigungsgesetz", lead markets etc.
