Innovative Development and Qualification of Large-Bore Flexible Hoses for Liquified Ammonia Transfer in Marine Offshore Applications
Topics:
- Various forms of hydrogen transportation
- Advantages for ammonia transportation vs. other forms
- Focus on ammonia transfer large-scale qualification of products in absence of international standards
- Procedures for selecting of materials to ammonia including laboratory testing
Abstract:
Target of the presentation will be to provide technical insights about the development and qualification of large-bore flexible hoses for the transfer of liquified ammonia, as green hydrogen carrier, for Single-Point Mooring marine offshore transfer applications.
The introduction will provide insights about the potential of ammonia as green hydrogen carrier.
The presentation will cover initially the steps required to select and characterize the suitable rubber polymer material, considering material tests which have been performed on a specifically developed laboratory for testing material samples in liquified ammonia at -35°C.
Then insights will be provided in the definition of the tests identified to qualify the product, this in absence of specific international standards or dedicated guidelines.
For marine transfer applications, large-bore flexible hoses are designed, manufactured and tested according to the GMPHOM 2009 guideline, which has been developed and is applicable for oil and LPG marine transfer applications. For ammonia transfer in maritime environment no international standard is currently available for large-bore hoses, to provide guidance about the qualification steps.
In absence of guidance from international standards, a technology review has been performed in collaboration with DNV as external third party, to assess and verify the novelty of the technology, review the qualification test plan, witness the test and assess the test results based on the identified acceptance criteria.
The presentation will conclude showing the main results and achievements of the technical qualification program, including some insights about a recently delivered first ammonia hose transfer system.
The presentation will be defended by Fabrizio Pagnanelli and Piero Mancinelli (Head of Tech Center Hydrogen at ContiTech).
