Panel Discussion: North Sea Powerhouse – Port Development and Offshore Electrolysis
The North Sea is far more than a popular holiday destination – it is a key pillar of Europe’s future energy system. As a natural energy hub for the surrounding countries, it already plays a crucial role in the generation of renewable power. As the energy transition accelerates, one technology is emerging as particularly promising: offshore electrolysis – the direct conversion of offshore wind energy into green hydrogen at sea.
The benefits are clear: significantly higher full-load hours compared to onshore installations, greater public acceptance for construction, and the ability to produce large volumes of green hydrogen close to the point of energy generation.
However, to unlock this potential, the ports along the North Sea must be further developed and prepared for the demands of a hydrogen-based economy – both in terms of infrastructure and logistics.
This panel brings together key stakeholders from offshore hydrogen production, port development, and hydrogen transport. Together, they will discuss the opportunities, challenges, and strategic steps needed to turn the North Sea into a true powerhouse of the European energy transition.
