Testing Liquid Hydrogen Systems: Independent Validation for Safe and Scalable LH₂ Applications

21 Oct 2026
Hydrogen Stage B Sponsored by W.L. Gore
Safety and Networks

As liquid hydrogen (LH₂) gains momentum in heavy-duty mobility, aviation, and large-scale energy applications, the need for reliable testing and validation of LH₂ components and storage systems is becoming increasingly critical.

This presentation will provide insights into the unique challenges associated with testing LH₂ and supercritical hydrogen systems, based on the experience of Kiwa ET as one of the few independent laboratories worldwide with dedicated LH₂ testing infrastructure.

The session will cover:

  • Testing and validation of LH₂ storage systems and components, including tanks, valves, pumps, sensors, heat exchangers, and level probes
  • Key performance and safety evaluations such as refueling behaviour, boil-off rates, pressure management, fuel withdrawal dynamics, and system monitoring
  • The challenges of handling cryogenic and supercritical hydrogen under real operating conditions
  • The importance of independent testing, confidentiality, and flexible test environments for accelerating product development and market readiness

The presentation will also highlight how close collaboration between testing laboratories and manufacturers supports safe product development, regulatory compliance, and faster market entry for next-generation hydrogen technologies.
