Electrolyzer efficiency is a key factor for reducing the cost of green hydrogen, but real-world performance depends on operating conditions, durability, and system integration. This presentation compares PEM, AEM, and SOEC technologies from an industrial perspective, focusing on efficiency and energy consumption under realistic operating conditions, degradation behavior, reliability requirements, and application-specific suitability.

 

The session highlights the remaining technical challenges and validation needs for emerging AEM and SOEC technologies, while assessing their readiness for large-scale deployment. Drawing on AVL’s experience in testing, modelling, system design, and technology assessment, practical insights into technology performance, lifetime, and industrial applicability will be shared.
