From Capture plant to CO₂ Export: Lessons from delivering Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS Project

Decarbonizing industrial facilities requires deep emissions reductions while preserving reliability, asset value and competitiveness. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is considered as the main decarbonizing solution for energy-intensive and hard-to-abate sectors, but its successful deployment depends on the effective integration of the entire CO₂ value chain, from capture and conditioning to compression, liquefaction, transport, storage interface and permanent sequestration.
This presentation is focused on the key lessons drawn from Stockholm Exergi large-scale EPC BECCS project, designed to capture approximately 800,000 tonnes per year of biogenic CO₂ from the Värtaverket biomass-fueled combined heat and power plant. This CO₂ capture facility based on HPC technology that removed the CO2 from the flue gas before being dried and liquefied for successive ship loading and export to offshore geological storage, delivering negative emissions and realizing the Europe’s first large-scale CDR project.
The project demonstrates the main challenges of CCS deployment, including limited plot space, urban integration, logistics, modularization, storage readiness and export infrastructure. Furthermore, the project highlights the importance of properly integrating the process technologies.
