HOMOLOGATION OF H2 ICE VAN
PHINIA has advanced its hydrogen internal combustion engine (H₂ICE) application for light commercial vehicles. The powertrain and overall system integration have been developed to meet homologation requirements, including the introduction of new materials and dedicated components within the fuel injection, ignition, and critical mechanical systems. A comprehensive validation program was conducted under real‑world operating conditions, covering extreme temperatures, high altitudes, high‑mileage durability, and sustained high‑load operation. Following development, the vehicle successfully completed homologation, supported by a robust system safety concept combining certified hardware, advanced software fault detection, and recovery strategies. The final retrofit solution offers practical vehicle utility, enabling the transport of up to nine passengers or over one tonne of payload, with a driving range of up to 500 km and rapid refuelling capability of approximately 100 km per minute. This presentation will focus on the engineering results, homologation pathway, validation programme, and safety concept behind the project.
