Hydrogen-Ready Gas Infrastructure: A Practical Framework for Safe Retrofit and New Supply Decisions

21 Oct 2026
Hydrogen Stage B Sponsored by W.L. Gore
Safety and Networks

As hydrogen moves from pilot projects into real gas infrastructure, operators, suppliers and project developers need practical ways to assess whether existing and new equipment is genuinely hydrogen-ready.

For gas pressure regulation and associated safety devices, this requires more than a simple material compatibility check. The assessment also needs to consider sealing performance, leakage and permeability, operating pressure and hydrogen partial pressure, temperature, loading conditions and the validation evidence available for the intended application.

This presentation outlines a practical framework for hydrogen readiness assessment in both retrofit and new-supply projects. It explains how standards and technical guidance, supplier evidence and engineering judgement can be combined to support safe, traceable and proportionate decisions.

It also addresses intermediate hydrogen blends, assembled systems with buy-out components, and the difference between component-level suitability and system-level readiness. The aim is to provide a practical starting point for assessing hydrogen infrastructure without overstating product capabilities or extending conclusions beyond the available evidence.
