Hydrogen-Ready Gas Infrastructure: A Practical Framework for Safe Retrofit and New Supply Decisions

21 Oct 2026
Hydrogen Stage Sponsored by W.L. Gore

As hydrogen deployment moves from pilot projects into real gas infrastructure, operators, suppliers and project developers need clear, practical ways to assess whether equipment is genuinely hydrogen-ready. For gas pressure regulation and safety devices, this requires more than a simple material compatibility check. It also means considering sealing performance, leakage and permeability, operating conditions, hydrogen partial pressure, stress regimes and the level of validation evidence available.

This presentation will outline a practical framework for hydrogen readiness assessment in both retrofit and new-supply projects. It will highlight how standards, supplier evidence, technical guidance and engineering judgement can be combined to support safe, traceable and proportionate decisions.

The presentation will also address common areas of uncertainty, including intermediate hydrogen blends, assembled systems with buy-out components, and the difference between component-level suitability and system-level readiness. The aim is to provide a pragmatic starting point for assessing hydrogen infrastructure without overstating product capabilities or relying on inconsistent assumptions.
