There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Hydrogen Storage Solution: Matching Technology to Application Requirements

20 Oct 2026
Hydrogen Stage B Sponsored by W.L. Gore
Production and Infrastructure

The diversity of emerging hydrogen applications is challenging the traditional approach to hydrogen storage system design. Storage solutions initially developed for refueling stations are increasingly being considered for renewable hydrogen plants, industrial process integration, energy storage and e-fuels production, each characterized by distinctly different operating conditions.

This presentation discusses the importance of adopting an application-oriented approach to hydrogen storage system selection and design. Parameters such as operating pressure, storage capacity, cycling frequency, expansion plans, maintenance philosophy and expected lifetime can substantially influence the optimal storage architecture.

Drawing on recent developments within Tenaris' hydrogen storage portfolio, the presentation illustrates how modular steel vessel technologies can be adapted to serve pressure ranges from industrial buffer storage to high-pressure mobility applications. Recent advances in vessel design, modular rack configurations, sealing technologies and lifecycle management methodologies are reviewed to demonstrate how storage systems can be tailored to different operational scenarios.

The work highlights the benefits of scalability, modularity and lifecycle optimization as key enablers for reducing investment uncertainty and supporting the gradual growth of hydrogen infrastructures.
