Taking control of Europe’s energy destiny – bio and e-fuel synergies
Taking control of Europe’s energy destiny – bio and e-fuel synergies
• Energy crisis: Europe’s unique dependence on fossil fuel imports – highest of any region as a share of consumption. Radical growth in bio and e-fuels needed alongside electrification – current pathway to energy independence is far too slow.
• Local resources: Scale of renewable electricity that could be curtailed or very low cost in coming years; and scale of sustainable bioenergy feedstocks in Europe.
• Synergies: Capture CO2 from upgrading of biogas to biomethane or from other gasification processes – you get a higher-value bioenergy to replace imported natural gas and imported oil-based fuels; then combine the CO2 with green H2 to make e-fuels, to further reduce imports of oil products.
• Project examples: A few example projects looking to develop these synergies to maximise output and minimise energy losses.
