The funding paradox: What's holding back Sweden's carbon capture projects?
Sweden’s approach with a reversed-auction support scheme for biogenic carbon capture has mobilised rapid interest by directly incentivising permanent carbon removals. Over 2000 MEUR has been granted so far by the Swedish Energy Agency with another round open where an additional 1000 MEUR will be granted.
But, in an apparent paradox, Swedish carbon capture projects have struggled to advance the past two years and many have been put on a halt since the auction opened . How come?
In this presentation Ramboll’s Carbon Capture Sweden Team Lead and Chief Project Manager Johanna Ek Wahlqvist shares our findings about the success
critera and hidden pitfalls of public funding schemes and what unites the successful projects that manage to reach FID. With case studies from the Nordics we show how the public funding can be a real support for the business model of carbon removals.
