Unlocking CCS potential: development of an onshore CO2 pipeline network to connect emission hubs to storage facilities

CCS is crucial for achieving global decarbonization targets by reducing CO2 emissions from hard-to-abate and energy-intensive sectors. A key enabler for unlocking CCS potential is CO2 transport via pipelines, which links emission sources to storage sites. In Italy, Snam is developing a CO2 pipeline network connecting emitters to the Ravenna CCS storage site, playing a pivotal role in advancing decarbonization in Southern Europe.
The storage facilities, developed through a 50:50 JV between Snam and Eni, will leverage a significant capacity of over 500 Mt of CO2 in depleted gas fields in the Adriatic Sea (with an annual injection capacity of 4 Mtpa by 2030 and 16 Mtpa thereafter).
A public market survey on CCS in Italy collected non-binding expressions of interest for CO2 transportation and storage at the Ravenna site, amounting to about 30 Mtpa.
Unlike some European regions where CO2-emitting industries are near storage sites, in Italy these industries are mainly spread across the Po Valley (Northern Italy). However, their geographical distribution enables clustering, supporting the development of shared CO₂ transport infrastructure.
Based on this premise, a dedicated onshore CO2 transport network will be progressively deployed across the Po Valley, which represents 70% of the estimated demand.
