AGC Plasma Technology Solutions to Advance Coating Solutions for Green Hydrogen Industry
As the green hydrogen industry moves towards large-scale commercialization, improving the performance, durability and cost efficiency of electrolyzers and fuel cells is becoming increasingly important. AGC Plasma Technology Solutions applies its decades of expertise in industrial plasma and PVD coating technologies to address these challenges. Its advanced magnetron sputtering solutions enable the deposition of thin, highly uniform protective coatings on critical components, helping reduce precious-metal consumption while enhancing component durability and performance. This technology provides a scalable pathway from coating development and testing to high-volume industrial production.
AGC Plasma Technology Solutions, the vacuum coating equipment division of the AGC Group, makes a significant investment in upgrading one of its magnetron sputtering coaters in its demonstration center in Lauenförde, Germany. The upgrade includes adding a plasma cleaning source, the installation of additional power supplies and the investment in a platinum target. This investment positions AGC Plasma to make a protective coating of platinum (or alternative customer-specific materials) on the Porous Transport Layers (PTL) and bipolar plates, which are essential components of electrolysers and fuel cells. The maximum dimension for the samples will be 1750 mm x 1500 mm. Applying the noble metal by magnetron sputtering will allow to significantly reduce the coating thicknesses, minimizing raw consumption and making the electrolyser and fuel cell production more economical.
Hugues Wiame, General Manager of AGC Plasma Technology Solutions, stated:
"This investment empowers AGC Plasma to provide process solutions for high-quality protective coatings tailored to the green hydrogen market. By implementing the technology in our demonstration center in Lauenförde, Germany, we can offer coating services to the industry while also delivering turnkey coating equipment to our customers. We are convinced that our experience for the mass production of coated glasses optimizing the semi precious metal (Ag) consumption is relevant and very valuable for the green hydrogen industry."
AGC Plasma’s demonstration center in Lauenförde will serve as a hub for coating services, providing customers with immediate access to these advanced solutions. Beyond offering coating services, AGC Plasma will also manufacture, install, and commission inline coating equipment at customer sites, ensuring seamless integration and optimized operation.
This investment underscores AGC’s commitment to supporting the global green hydrogen economy by delivering innovative solutions that enhance the efficiency and durability of hydrogen production and fuel cell technologies.
