In this future-oriented project, an existing salt cavern will be converted into a hydrogen storage facility. As part of the project, new pipelines have to be installed to ensure that the cavern can be used as a hydrogen storage facility. This is a large and challenging project, as pipes have to be installed at a depth of around 1,400 to 1,500 meters and must be completely gas-tight.

The products specially developed by voestalpine Tubulars for hydrogen applications play a central role in this project. On the one hand, these are hydrogen gas-tight pipe connections. Secondly, we have developed grades that are resistant to hydrogen embrittlement and therefore do not allow any corrosion. These tailor-made solutions are used optimally by the customer.

In order to guarantee a smooth installation process for our products, we were also directly on site and supported the project team with training, inspections and checking the screw connection diagrams.

The installation of the pipes in the hydrogen salt cavern is an important milestone for voestalpine Tubulars, as it is the first installation of the VAhyper® premium connection in combination with this hydrogen quality. At the same time, this project marks a significant advance in hydrogen storage technology and represents an important step towards a sustainable energy supply.
