SPIR STAR Hydrogen Hoses
With extensive experience in ultra-high-pressure technology and hydrogen applications, SPIR STAR® develops thermoplastic high-pressure hoses for the evolving hydrogen infrastructure. At the Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe, the company is presenting three specialised hose types designed to meet different requirements in hydrogen refuelling, distribution and transfer: the 6mmHydrogen, 10mmHydrogen and 16mmHydrogen.
SPIR STAR® is a leading international manufacturer of thermoplastic ultra-high-pressure hoses with spiralised steel-wire reinforcement. Since 1989, the family-owned company has been developing and manufacturing high-quality hose solutions in Germany for demanding applications worldwide. Its product portfolio includes high-pressure hoses as well as valves, fittings, adapters, tubing and couplings for industries including hydrogen, waterjetting, hydraulics, oil and gas, and industrial PTFE applications.
Recognising the importance of hydrogen for the future of mobility and energy, SPIR STAR® entered the hydrogen market at an early stage. Since 2009, the company has been supplying high-pressure hoses for the safe refuelling and transfer of gaseous hydrogen. Today, its hydrogen portfolio covers applications ranging from passenger vehicle refuelling to high-flow filling processes and the refuelling of ultra-heavy-duty vehicles.
6mmHydrogen – proven performance for vehicle refuelling
The 6mmHydrogen was the first hydrogen hose developed by SPIR STAR®. It is designed for H35 and H70 applications and is used directly at hydrogen dispensers between the refuelling nozzle and the breakaway coupling. With a maximum working pressure of 962.5 bar, it is suitable for refuelling light-duty vehicles such as passenger cars and buses.
The hose is fully certified to ISO 19880-5 and fulfils the requirements of SAE J2601, supporting safe and reliable hydrogen refuelling processes.
10mmHydrogen – high flow for faster refuelling
Developed for applications requiring significantly higher flow rates, the ISO 19880-5 certified 10mmHydrogen combines a maximum working pressure of 962.5 bar with an inner diameter of 9.9 mm.
The hose enables hydrogen flow rates of up to 300 g/s and can achieve refuelling speeds up to three times faster than conventional hoses with a smaller inner diameter at the same pressure. It is therefore ideally suited for H70 high-flow applications, modern hydrogen refuelling stations, heavy-duty vehicle refuelling, trailer filling and industrial applications.
Despite its high performance, the 10mmHydrogen offers excellent handling. A minimum bend radius of only 180 mm and a low weight of 0.64 kg/m provide flexibility and manoeuvrability, while its exceptionally low permeation rate contributes to safety and durability.
16mmHydrogen – high-volume solutions for large-scale applications
The 16mmHydrogen complements the portfolio with a larger inner diameter for applications requiring particularly high volume flows. With a maximum working pressure of 600 bar, it is designed for hydrogen transfer and the refuelling of ultra-heavy-duty vehicles such as trains and ships. It is also suitable for the efficient filling and unloading of hydrogen trailers and containers.
A comprehensive portfolio for the hydrogen infrastructure
Together, the three hose types enable SPIR STAR® to provide application-specific solutions for a broad range of hydrogen refuelling and transfer processes. Great handling, low permeation rates and the availability of multiple fittings make the hoses suitable for integration into different hydrogen systems.
With many years of experience, continuous product development and high manufacturing standards, SPIR STAR® supports customers worldwide in establishing safe, durable and efficient hydrogen infrastructure.
