With green hydrogen toward climate-neutral production: How tesa is contributing to the growth of the hydrogen value chain

As part of tesa’s sustainability strategy “we do”, tesa is working toward climate-neutral production by 2030.A crucial success factor in our transformation is a flexible energy infrastructure paired with flexible energy supply contracts, which are essential due to volatile markets.
Green hydrogen production technologies offer promising alternatives to fossil fuels like natural gas, with green hydrogen being used as fuel. While the technologies for producing green hydrogen are well established, large-scale industrial production and a nationwide supply infrastructure are still in the development stage in Germany.
At the Hamburg plant, the largest production site and home to energy-intensive adhesive tape manufacturing, an award-winning transformation concept is paving the way to climate neutrality. It is based on four pillars: green hydrogen, electrification of process steam with heat storage, AI-supported control systems, and continuous efficiency improvements. In collaboration with Hamburger Energienetze GmbH, we aim to connect the Hamburg plant to the supply network as part of the HH-WIN (Hamburg Hydrogen Industrial Network) project. Hydrogen will supplement electricity and gas and play a key role in reducing CO2 emissions at tesa’s most energy-intensive production site by 2027. The use of green hydrogen could save around 6,000 tons of CO2 annually.

With over 130 years of innovations in adhesive tapes and self-adhesive products, tesa aims at developing and providing high value polymer-based solutions to the hydrogen value chain that can accelerate the scale up of green hydrogen production and use, enabling economies of scale.
