Biogas CO₂ Methanation – Converting CO₂ into RFNBO eMethane
Biogas plants contain a valuable carbon resource that is commonly separated and released as CO₂ during conventional upgrading. Q Power’s biological methanation technology converts this CO₂ together with renewable hydrogen into additional renewable methane.
The solution can be integrated into both new and existing biogas plants through several standardized configurations:
- Utilization of separated CO₂ from an existing upgrading unit
- Direct methanation of raw biogas
- Stand-alone methanation with independent gas polishing
- Fully integrated methanation and biogas-upgrading systems
This allows operators to increase methane production without increasing biogas feedstock consumption, improve overall carbon utilization and access both biomethane and RFNBO eMethane markets.
Q Power’s proprietary solid-state biological methanation technology provides flexible operation, high methane conversion and efficient integration with variable renewable hydrogen production. Closed-loop gas polishing enables residual methane, hydrogen and CO₂ to be returned to the process instead of being discharged as gaseous reject streams.
Q Power can provide the complete delivery scope, including:
- Plant integration and process engineering
- Biological methanation
- CO₂ and methane treatment
- Gas polishing, drying and compression
- Electrolyser and hydrogen-system integration
- Installation, commissioning and lifecycle support
The technology is based on more than 15 years of Power-to-X development and has been demonstrated across biogas, industrial CO₂, flue gas and other carbon-containing gas streams. Q Power has also delivered an industrial-scale eMethane plant in Finland.
