Hydrogen Combustion-Based Energy Systems for Off-Road and Maritime Applications
Our energy platform brings hydrogen to applications where battery-electric drives reach their limits: high continuous loads, long operating hours and limited charging infrastructure. The approach is retrofit-first. Vehicles, machines and vessels are kept, and only the drive system is exchanged.
Typical applications
- Off-road: airport ground support equipment, intralogistics and heavy-duty forklifts, special and municipal vehicles, other machinery with high duty cycles
- Maritime: hybrid ferries and car ferries, car ferries, onboard power generation
Maritime concept: hydrogen-hybrid ferry retrofit
Existing ferries are retrofitted rather than rebuilt. The diesel engines are replaced by electric motors, while the propulsion units, hull and superstructure remain unchanged.
- Energy concept: A traction battery is charged overnight from shore power. Hydrogen engine-generators recharge it during the day as needed.
- Operation: Port manoeuvres run on battery power alone, so they are emission-free.
- Infrastructure: One shore power connection and a compact hydrogen refuelling station are sufficient. There is no fast charging at the landing stages and no tank container swapping.
Key benefits
- Near-zero emissions: no CO₂ emissions in operation, very low NOx
- Higher efficiency: substantially higher tank-to-shaft efficiency than diesel engines running at low part load
- Robust technology: combustion engine know-how enables maintenance through existing service networks
- No hydrogen quality requirements: compatible with varying hydrogen qualities
- Low acquisition costs compared to fuel cell systems, with a significantly longer service life of the energy converter
- High continuous power and power density for demanding load cycles
- Fast refuelling using existing 350-bar infrastructure
- Retrofit-capable: cost-efficient conversion of existing vehicles and vessels
