Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Technology Services by ZBT
ZBT is a research and development partner for hydrogen, fuel cell and electrolysis technologies, supporting companies and other organizations along the entire innovation chain.
Development: From materials and individual components to stacks and complete systems, ZBT develops and optimizes electrochemical technologies. Our expertise includes CAD and engineering, bipolar plate design, catalysts and catalyst inks, compounds and sealing materials, as well as control and operating strategies for fuel cell and electrolysis systems.
Manufacturing Processes & Scale-up: We develop and optimize manufacturing routes from functional coatings and component production to assembly and quality assurance. Our capabilities include CCM manufacturing, bipolar plate production and coating, dispersion and layer processing, injection moulding, continuous manufacturing processes, dispensing technologies and stack assembly, with a strong focus on scalability, quality and economic production.
Measurement, Testing & Qualification: ZBT offers comprehensive analytical, electrochemical and system-level testing for materials, components and complete systems. The portfolio ranges from advanced material characterization and in-situ testing to ageing and degradation analysis, performance benchmarking, quality assurance and Hardware-in-the-Loop validation under realistic operating conditions.
Modelling & Simulation: Physics-based, reduced-order and data-driven models help us understand and optimize hydrogen technologies across multiple scales, from porous materials and electrochemical cells to stacks, refuelling stations and complete energy systems. Our work includes CFD, multiphysics and process simulation, performance and degradation modelling, system optimization and machine-learning approaches, closely linked to experimental validation.
Consulting & Studies: We provide technology-neutral advice on the selection, design and integration of hydrogen technologies as well as infrastructure, safety, regulation, certification and permitting. Systemic and techno-economic studies, technology comparisons, transformation pathways, lifecycle assessments (LCA) and lifecycle cost analyses (LCC) provide scientifically sound foundations for strategic and investment decisions.
Together, these capabilities allow ZBT to connect scientific understanding with practical engineering and support hydrogen technologies from concept and development through validation, scale-up and implementation.
