Precious Metal-Free Electrodes for Alkaline Water Electrolysis
Global demand for hydrogen is increasing rapidly, and it is expected to play a key role in a decarbonized society. Alkaline Water Electrolysis (AWE) is attracting attention for large-scale hydrogen production; however, conventional electrodes rely on precious metals such as Pt, Ru, and cobalt, which are costly and subject to supply-chain risks.
Toyota Industries Corporation has developed high-performance alkaline water electrolysis electrodes (Anode and Cathode) without precious metals or cobalt. These nickel-based electrodes use originally developed materials, leveraging technologies from bipolar nickel–metal hydride batteries that Toyota Industries Corporation mass-produces for hybrid vehicles. Performance tests show an electrolysis efficiency of 84% at 600 mA/cm² with high durability.
In addition, Toyota Industries has established advanced manufacturing technologies and successfully produced 1.2m-wide electrodes using a roll-to-roll process. These electrodes have reached a quality level suitable for full-scale customer evaluation.
By combining high-performance electrode technology with scalable manufacturing processes, we aim to contribute to the widespread adoption of green hydrogen. We are currently advancing commercialization activities with a target launch around 2028.
