In a wide range of industries sodium formate solution is used as biodegradable de-icing salt and antifreeze. It may be used as a solid or dissolved in solution. Drilling fluid based on sodium formate solution are used for high pressure or temperature activities, particularly in oil/gas drilling, where they offer a non-corrosive alternative to divalent brines. Liquid detergents, as well as other washing and cleaning products, often incorporate sodium formate to help regulate product pH and prevent the build up of soap scum. In agriculture sodium formate can be deployed as a greener alternative to other herbicides.
