The X-Stack: Electrolysis Stack with up to 9 cells
The X-Stack takes Redox Flow's modular electrolysis cell (X-Cell) from single-cell testing to stack-scale research - arguably a uniquely designed electrolyzer stack built specifically for R&D. Each cell offers a 25 cm² (5 × 5 cm) active area, and stacks can be configured with up to 9 cells, so you can move from component testing straight through to upscaling and demonstration without switching systems.
The X-Stack is available in two variants. The standard (flat) version uses flat bipolar plates and suits electrodes of 1 mm thickness or more. The X-Stack w. FF uses bipolar plates with interdigitated flow fields, enabling testing of much thinner electrodes - down to 0 mm - making it well suited to characterizing membranes, electrodes, and bipolar plates individually before scaling up.
Both variants share a PEEK flow body, stainless steel end plates, and gaskets in PTFE, EPDM, or VITON, with bipolar plates available in nickel, titanium, copper, gold-coated titanium, platinum-coated titanium, or stainless steel. Individual cell voltages can be measured directly on the bipolar plates, and careful flow field channel design minimizes shunt currents. The X-Stack supports alkaline, AEM, and PEM electrolysis, as well as CO2 electrolysis.
