Curtailment Costs Explained
Storelectric Director Trevor Bailey explains curtailment costs. There's always a mismatch between electricity supply and demand, and when the renewables produces more power than people can use, without energy storage, production of it has to be switched off - at cost. In the UK alone, 2022's curtailed power could have supplied a million homes. As more offshore wind and renewable capacity comes online, curtailment keeps rising, and at a global scale it's growing exponentially. Large-scale, long-duration electricity storage can mitigate the need for curtailment.
