DecarbonICE - Denmark and Iceland

Decarbonice Hall: B5 Stand: SZ06

Demonstrating Solid CO₂ Transport Using Existing Container Infrastructure

This video follows a DecarbonICE demonstration in which solid CO₂ was loaded into an insulated intermodal container and transported from Denmark to Iceland using conventional container logistics.

The key objective was to demonstrate a fundamental part of the DecarbonICE concept: that captured CO₂ can be transported in solid form using the same infrastructure already used to move millions of standard containers around the world.

With solid CO₂ inside, the container was handled as part of a normal intermodal transport chain and shipped to Iceland on a regular container vessel – without the need for a dedicated CO₂ carrier or pressurized liquid-CO₂ tank container.

During the journey, the demonstration provided valuable real-world data and experience related to insulation performance, sublimation, temperature development, pressure management, container handling and the practical requirements for transporting solid CO₂ over longer distances.

The demonstration illustrates the potential of DecarbonICE as a flexible complement to pipelines and conventional liquid-CO₂ transport. By utilizing existing container, road, rail, port and shipping infrastructure, solid CO₂ logistics could provide a scalable way of connecting smaller and geographically dispersed capture sites with CO₂ hubs and permanent storage locations.

For DecarbonICE, the journey to Iceland represented an important step from concept towards demonstrating a practical, multimodal logistics chain for captured CO₂.
