AMBARtec AG, based in Dresden, is an innovation leader in the field of iron oxide-based hydrogen storage systems. The underlying process is the iron-steam process – a proven technology that was already used on an industrial scale in the 1970s and has since been consistently advanced by AMBARtec to make it suitable for the modern hydrogen economy. The process is based on the reduction and oxidation of iron oxide or iron: during loading, the added hydrogen reduces the iron oxide storage medium, and the water vapour released in the process can be reused in electrolysis. During discharge, water vapour is added to the storage unit at the point of use, causing the iron to oxidise and release hydrogen.
The results of multi-stage practical tests at the demonstration plant in Freiberg confirm the excellent energy balance of the entire process – from hydrogen production to storage unit filling, transport and discharge of the hydrogen. Optimum system integration of high-temperature electrolysis (SOEC) enables efficiencies of more than 80 per cent to be achieved.
AMBARtec offers compact hydrogen storage systems with very high energy density, using iron oxide nuggets as the storage material, which are already ready to use for industrial applications. The possible applications range from highly efficient energy storage to the safe transport of hydrogen, even over long, intercontinental distances using conventional transport logistics, through to hydrogen drives in shipping. AMBARtec thus provides the "missing link" between hydrogen production and use, enabling the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy. As a storage provider, AMBARtec is also increasingly taking on a role in initiating trade in low-cost hydrogen.
In collaboration with Rouge H2 Engineering AG, AMBARtec also offers an alternative process based on iron oxide nuggets to produce very pure hydrogen from dirty gases, such as blast furnace gases and synthesis gases from biogenic residues or sewage sludge. When combined with CCS/U, this "steam-iron process" has the potential to make steelworks climate-neutral at a reasonable cost. Furthermore, this process enables the recovery of hydrogen that has already been used, such as in inert gas atmospheres. This hydrogen is currently vented, but it can be recycled by AMBARtec's technology and put to further use.
