CELEST is a leading research platform dedicated to advancing the energy storage technologies that will power the future. Bringing together expertise from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Ulm University, and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW), CELEST drives innovation from fundamental research at the atomic scale to the development, testing, and pilot production of new battery cells and energy systems. Its work focuses on lithium-ion technology, next-generation post-lithium batteries, hydrogen technologies, and other electrochemical storage solutions. By linking academic research with industry collaboration and technology transfer, CELEST accelerates the development of safer, more sustainable, and more efficient energy storage systems for a climate-neutral future.

Our mission is:

  1. Work on the energy storage and conversion of the future.
  2. Cooperate in interdisciplinary research and innovation in the field of EES ranging from basic research to technical applications.
  3. Cooperate on students’ and post-docs’ qualification.
  4. Plan, prepare, and organize new joint endeavors in research, innovation, and technology transfer.
  5. Act as a platform to improve communication.
  6. Coordinate and further develop joint activities with other universities and research institutions as well as the industry, at home and abroad.
