CURA is a cleantech company developing electrochemical pre-calcination carbon capture technology to decarbonize cement, an industry responsible for roughly 8% of global CO₂ emissions.
Cement is foundational to modern life, with more than 4.5 billion tonnes produced globally each year. But producing it is inherently carbon intensive. A significant share of cement emissions comes from calcination, the chemical process that releases CO₂ when calcium carbonate is converted into lime.
CURA is rethinking that step.
CURA’s precalcination electrochemical technology removes CO₂ from calcium-rich feedstocks before they enter the conventional cement production process. The process produces a low-carbon calcium product that can be used in cement manufacturing, while generating a concentrated pure CO₂ stream ready for capture, transport, storage or utilization.
By separating CO₂ upstream and avoiding the need to capture it from dilute, high-temperature flue gas, CURA takes a fundamentally different approach to carbon capture in cement. The technology has the potential to reduce cement emissions by up to 85% while helping producers preserve margins through lower reliance on costly downstream capture systems and integration with existing cement and lime infrastructure. It can also work with a range of available calcium-rich feedstocks, supporting deployment across different regions and plant configurations.
CURA is currently advancing from pilot-scale operations toward larger demonstration projects, working with cement producers, engineering partners and other industrial organizations to validate performance, scale the technology and prepare for commercial deployment.
CURA’s goal is to make decarbonization of cement practical, scalable and economically competitive — enabling the world to keep building the infrastructure it needs while dramatically reducing the emissions associated with one of its most essential materials.
