DGS Drahtgestricke GmbH - Knitted Wire Mesh for Green Hydrogen Electrolysis

As the hydrogen economy scales up, component performance inside the electrolyzer stack becomes a critical lever for efficiency and cost. DGS Drahtgestricke GmbH manufactures precision knitted wire mesh engineered specifically for use as a Porous Transport Layer (PTL) and Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) in both alkaline and PEM electrolyzers.

Positioned between the membrane electrode assembly and the bipolar plate, our knitted wire mesh acts like a precision-engineered spring: it adapts under compression to evenly distribute clamping forces and ensure consistent, low-resistance contact with the catalyst layer. Its open, three-dimensional pore structure enables efficient two-phase flow, allowing hydrogen and oxygen to escape freely while maintaining uninterrupted electrolyte access to the reaction sites.

Independent research by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has demonstrated that knitted wire mesh PTLs can increase current density by 33% and reduce cell voltage by 74 mV at 2 A/cm² compared to standard configurations - translating directly into higher efficiency and lower energy costs across the hydrogen value chain.

Available in stainless steel and corrosion-resistant alloys, tailored in wire diameter, mesh density, and geometry: DGS delivers PTL solutions engineered for the demands of scalable, efficient hydrogen production.
