The Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien) is one of the leading technical universities in Europe, located in the heart of Vienna. The research area "Thermal Process Engineering and Simulation" at the Institute of Chemical, Environmental, and Bioscience Engineering is focused on the separation and purification of hydrogen from enriched natural gas, contaminated hydrogen gas mixtures from porous storage, and products of Steam Methane Reforming (SMR). The award-winning "HylyPure®" technology utilizes an electrochemical process for the selective separation and compression of hydrogen through an electrochemical hydrogen separator and compressor. This enables the energy-efficient transport of hydrogen via the natural gas network and its subsequent recovery for specific applications. The portfolio also includes other gas separation technologies such as low-pressure and high-pressure Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) and gas permeation. Additional research focuses include fluid dynamic simulations, CO2 utilization in the context of CO2 refineries, biorefineries, sustainable technologies, and process simulations.
