IMP GmbH (Industrial Microwave Processes) is a German deep-tech company based in Reichelsheim, Germany. We develop scalable microwave technologies for hydrogen and solid carbon production, industrial process heating and chemical applications. Our mission is to translate advanced microwave science into robust, modular and commercially viable systems that can be deployed beyond specialised laboratory and niche applications.
Unlike conventional furnaces, burners and externally heated reactors, microwave energy can be delivered directly into the process material or reaction zone. This volumetric heating approach enables rapid response, precise process control and flexible operation, while offering significant potential to improve energy efficiency, throughput and product quality. As our systems are powered entirely by electricity, they can be integrated with renewable energy sources and contribute to the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industrial processes.
A key focus of IMP is the microwave-assisted catalytic conversion of methane-rich feedstocks into hydrogen and solid carbon. This approach enables decentralised hydrogen production while avoiding direct CO₂ formation within the core reaction. At the same time, the resulting solid carbon can create additional value as an industrial raw material. IMP is developing modular reactor concepts that can be scaled from laboratory and pilot applications towards industrial production capacities.
Our technology portfolio also includes microwave plasma burners for high-temperature process heat and plasma chemistry, as well as microwave rotary-kiln concepts for calcination, carbonisation and advanced-material processing.
Potential markets include decentralised hydrogen production, microgrids and resilient energy systems, chemical and petrochemical production, biogas and waste-to-value applications, fertiliser production, advanced carbon and battery materials, construction materials, steel and heavy industry, and the electrification of processes currently relying on gas-fired burners, furnaces or rotary kilns.
Our potential customers and partners include hydrogen project developers, energy and microgrid companies, operators of biogas plants and wastewater treatment facilities, chemical and materials manufacturers, industrial plant operators, equipment manufacturers, engineering and EPC companies and research institutions. IMP can support both individual development projects and strategic partnerships for new industrial applications.
We accompany customers throughout the complete development journey: From feasibility studies, material characterisation and electromagnetic simulation to pilot testing, mechanical design, process optimisation, full-scale prototyping and industrial integration. By combining specialist microwave expertise with interdisciplinary engineering, we help our partners develop more efficient, flexible and sustainable industrial processes.
