SCANTECH develops and manufactures measurement and control systems for continuous material production. For more than four decades, our web gauging systems have measured basis weight, thickness, moisture and coating weight directly on the running web, giving manufacturers real-time process control instead of retrospective offline sampling.
Hydrogen technology is scaling from pilot lines to gigawatt-class manufacturing, and with that shift the decisive question changes. It is no longer whether a membrane electrode assembly can be produced, but whether it can be produced repeatably, at speed, and without wasting precious metal. Catalyst coating weight determines both cell performance and material cost. Iridium and platinum applied beyond specification is money coated onto the web and never recovered — while coating too little compromises the cell.
This is where in-line measurement becomes a production economics issue rather than a quality control formality. Our systems measure catalyst loading, membrane thickness and electrode coating directly on the moving web, feeding continuous profile data back into coating control. Deviations are detected as they occur, not hours later in the laboratory. Every roll carries a complete measurement record for batch documentation and customer audits.
We work with manufacturers of catalyst coated membranes, gas diffusion electrodes and bipolar plate coatings, as well as with the coating line builders supplying them. Every installation is engineered to the specific line: web width, speed, coating chemistry and control architecture. Our engineering, manufacturing and service are based in Germany, with international support through the SCANTECH group.
