Team SOLID is a student team of Eindhoven university of technology which focuses on iron-based hydrogen storage. The basis of SOLID and the very things we try to achieve are the mission and vision of SOLID. The mission is the goal that SOLID wants to reach, and the vision is how SOLID wants to reach that. The mission of SOLID is:
“Enabling access to clean and renewable energy for anyone at any time”
This is the goal SOLID strives for and will strive for during its entire existence. All activities SOLID has done and will be doing will be aimed at this mission. In order to achieve this mission, there is a vision which explains how SOLID intends to turn this mission into reality.
“Creating ecosystems for sustainable energy carriers”
This vision states the plan SOLID has in the long run, but needs to be divided into different steps and subjects this has to do with. But first, let’s start by explaining what an ecosystem truly is. An ecosystem, in this context, consists of all parties involved in developing and maintaining the technology. This includes the companies that design and build systems to extract and store energy in energy carriers, but also the users of this energy, logistical companies that transport the energy carrier, governmental bodies that influence regulations for energy carriers etc. To make energy carriers (and thereby SOLID’s mission) a success, SOLID cannot ‘just’ build a machine that stores and generates energy and sell it. All these other parties need to cooperate as well, and that’s why SOLID is aiming for an ecosystem and not a mere product.
SOLID aims to achieve this mission and vision by taking up an important position within the technological development. By positioning ourselves in the innovation valley of death, we take on risks that other profit-driven companies would not be able to. SOLID can guide the development of the technology from a low TRL to a higher TRL (TRL 5), while not needing to face the same consequences as commercial parties if the technology is eventually discarded due to lack of potential.
