ZBT in Duisburg, Germany, is a leading application-oriented research institute for hydrogen, fuel cell and electrolysis technologies. Founded in 2001, the not-for-profit institute bridges the gap between academic research and industrial development, turning scientific knowledge and technological advances into reliable, scalable and economically viable solutions for practical use.

Around 180 employees work across seven scientific departments on research and development covering the entire spectrum from functional materials, electrochemical components and manufacturing processes to fuel cell components, stacks and systems, electrolysis components and systems, hydrogen infrastructure and alternative energy carriers such as ammonia, methanol and methane. ZBT’s expertise includes the development, optimisation, qualification and testing of materials, components and systems, as well as modelling, simulation, analytics and advanced measurement and evaluation methods.

A key strength of ZBT is its extensive technical infrastructure. Modern laboratories, high-performance test facilities, analytical equipment and purpose-built test rigs enable research from material characterisation to system-level validation. On its large-scale hydrogen test field, complete plants and infrastructure components can be installed, combined and investigated under realistic conditions.

ZBT works closely with companies, research organisations and public-sector partners in national and European research programmes as well as bilateral industrial projects. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting industry and SMEs in developing competitive, resilient and climate-neutral technologies and bringing innovations into application.

ZBT is an affiliated institute and wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Duisburg-Essen and a member of the Johannes Rau Research Association. Its work is guided by scientific quality and integrity, application relevance, interdisciplinary collaboration and responsibility towards climate, environment, safety and society. The institute’s overarching goal is to help make hydrogen and sustainable energy technologies reliable, economical and safe components of future energy, mobility and industrial applications.
