20.6 Million Euros to Be Invested in New Production Facility for Electrolysers
In mid-September, the electrolyzer manufacturer signed the grant agreement together with the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The funds come from the EU Innovation Fund, which is financed by revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System. They will be used to build a new manufacturing facility in Tallinn, which is to be constructed in phases.
The facility is intended for the production of alkaline electrolyzer electrodes, pressure stacks, and electrolyzer systems. The planned annual production capacities are 250 MW for the electrodes, 150 MW for the stacks, and 66 MW for the systems.
Over 150 new jobs will be created
Specifically, Stargate Hydrogen’s technologies include electrodes coated with a patented ceramic catalyst. This is intended to replace precious metals and reduce dependence on imported critical raw materials. At the same time, the company aims to enable what it describes as efficient hydrogen production.
Over the first ten years of operation, the new facility is expected to reduce CO2-equivalent emissions by approximately 3 million metric tons by promoting the use of cost-effective green hydrogen in industries such as chemicals and steel.
The expansion of the production facility is also expected to create approximately 150 direct jobs. In addition, further jobs would be created in the areas of construction, logistics, and maintenance.
Electrolyzers Intended for Large-Scale Industrial Projects
Marko Virkebau, co-founder and CEO of Stargate Hydrogen, explained that once the plant expansion is complete, the company will be one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of electrolyzers. According to Virkebau, this level of production capacity is essential for supplying large-scale industrial projects aimed at producing green ammonia, synthetic natural gas, or sustainable aviation fuel.
Current customers include energy providers Fortum Oyj and OÜ Utilitas, among others.
IPCEI Project Aims to Advance Alkaline Electrolysis
The European Commission has recognized Stargate Hydrogen’s activities as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI). Specifically, the project focuses on the development of alkaline electrolysis technologies. The goal is to develop a ceramic-based, 1-MW alkaline electrolyzer that is ready for mass production and free of precious metals, and to scale up production to an industrial level. The project is currently being implemented in collaboration with partners from across Europe.
