Hamburg's 100 MW Electrolyser Now Fully Delivered

Siemens Energy has completed delivery of all six electrolyser modules for the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub's 100 MW plant in Moorburg. With hardware now on site, the project moves into its installation phase ahead of commercial operation in the second half of 2027.

Trucks have delivered the last electrolyser modules to the construction site in Hamburg's Moorburg district, completing Siemens Energy's shipment of all six units for the 100 MW Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH). The delivery fulfils an order the consortium of Luxcara and Hamburger Energiewerke placed with Siemens Energy in September 2024.

Integration Work Still Ahead

Before start-up, the plant still needs connections to supporting infrastructure — power supply, water treatment, cooling and compression systems, along with the hydrogen off-take routes. The consortium contracted Kraftanlagen Energies & Services in October 2025 to carry out this integration work. Commercial operation is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027, with the plant expected to produce around 10,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually once running.

The electrolysis process brings a secondary benefit: it generates roughly 13 MW of usable waste heat. According to the project company, that's enough to supply up to 6,000 residential units, lifting the plant's overall efficiency from about 70 percent to as much as 85 percent.

Grid Access Brings Renewable Power Straight to the Plant

Moorburg's location gives the project a strong grid connection, tying into both the 380 kV and 110 kV networks. That link lets regional wind and solar power flow directly to the electrolyser. Once produced, the hydrogen will reach customers via the HH-WIN distribution network and a dedicated truck-loading station.

A Former Coal Plant Becomes a Hydrogen Hub

The Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub occupies roughly 16,000 square metres of the former Moorburg power station site. Demolition of the coal plant began in October 2023, and the consortium took over an initial section of the site for preparatory work in summer 2024. In December 2025, representatives of the City of Hamburg joined project partners for the groundbreaking on the building that will house the electrolyser and compressors, with construction due to finish by mid-2026. The federal and state governments are backing the project through the EU's IPCEI programme; Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs handed over the corresponding funding notices in July 2024.

Ten-Year Service Agreement Rounds Out the Deal

Alongside the delivery, the HGHH consortium and Siemens Energy signed a ten-year maintenance contract, with neither side disclosing its value. The project ranks among Germany's first large-scale hydrogen ventures and is intended to support the decarbonisation of industry and port operations in Hamburg.
