Third Call for Proposals for International Hydrogen Projects Launched
The first call for proposals was issued in 2021, followed by the second in 2025. The BMWE has now published the third call for proposals for international hydrogen projects. To be eligible for funding, projects must ensure that value is created in Germany and Europe. According to the ministry, the funds earmarked for this purpose are still subject to the approval of the 2027 budget.
The goal of the funding guideline is to strengthen the use of German hydrogen technologies in industrial production facilities abroad and to prepare new markets and import routes for hydrogen products. Feasibility studies conducted throughout the project are also eligible for funding. The focus is primarily on German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including technology suppliers and project developers.
The funding guideline is being implemented in collaboration with the BMFTR, which provides project-based funding for basic research.
Up to 30 million euros per project are available
The application process consists of two stages: First, German companies submit a project outline. Outlines prioritized by the BMWE are then invited to submit a full application. The ministry expects to issue grant awards in the second half of 2027. Projects for the years 2027 through 2030 will each receive up to 30 million euros in funding.
To date, the BMWE has supported the testing of German technologies in Chile, Namibia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and Serbia. In the future, additional funding initiatives are set to launch in Southern Africa, the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa), Asia, South America, and Australia. Among the projects are initiatives for the production of renewable hydrogen, renewable aviation fuels, and green iron. According to the ministry, the majority of the funding goes to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Consultation and Information Session
On October 15, the BMWE will host a digital information session where interested companies can ask questions about the funding process. A previously completed funded project will provide practical insights into the application process and project implementation. Registration is now open.
In addition, the Projektträger Jülich (PtJ), on behalf of the BMWE, is advising potential applicants on questions related to the submission process.
