The government of the Canadian province of Alberta has revealed plans to launch two separate hydrogen funding competitions using the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund.
The funding will be used to support hydrogen technologies within the areas of production, transmission and distribution, storage, and in industries including heavy-duty transportation, industrial heat and chemicals.
A total of CAD$20m will be provided through Alberta Innovates’ Hydrogen Centre of Excellence for early-stage innovations. Furthermore, Natural Resources Canada will also allocate CAD$5m to Alberta Innovates through its Energy Innovation Program. Emissions Reduction Alberta will also provide CAD$25m for later-stage technologies. The funding will be used to bolster projects that are investigating technologies which are not yet commercially available.
The competitions are open to applicants from a wide range of sectors, and to make the process easier and more efficient, applicants can submit a single proposal for both funding streams.
Through the TIER program, the Government of Alberta will invest revenues from the industrial carbon price to speed up the development and adoption of clean technology solutions.
As a result of the Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan, Emissions Reduction Alberta received CAD$25m in TIER funding in 2023 to support investments in hydrogen development and the hydrogen value chain.
