Florian Scheffler

Researcher, Fraunhofer-Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST
Florian has been with Fraunhofer IST as a research associate in the Department of Sustainable Battery and Hydrogen Systems since May 2021 and is a Ph.D. student at TU Braunschweig supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Herrmann. He is involved in the ScaleH2 project within the German-Australian HyGATE programme funded by the BMFTR, where his work focuses on the techno-economic assessment of hydrogen and green iron import options from overseas into the EU. He contributes to the projects of the Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter, focusing on the economic assessment of hydrogen applications for industrial defossilisation. His recent talks include a masterclass at the Green Hydrogen Summit in Muscat, Oman, on evaluating hydrogen solutions for net-zero factories and the green steel sector, with insights and case studies from the Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter. He has also recently attended the CIRP Conference on Life Cycle Engineering 2026 in Japan, with a talk titled “Green Hydrogen for Net-Zero Manufacturing – A Case Study for a German Chemical Production Site.”
