Ulf Groos studied Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg until 1996. Afterwards he joined Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI in Karlsruhe until 1997. From 1998 to 1999 he was a consultant at Rudolf Spitzmueller in Gengenbach and gave advice mainly to small and medium sized enterprises regarding their innovation projects.
Beginning of 2000 he came to Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg. Since beginning of 2008 Ulf Groos is heading the department Fuel Cell with over 40 engineers and scientists and additional students. His department is focusing on membrane electrode assemblies in mobile fuel cells with the perspectives on in-situ characterization, ex-situ analytics, production technologies, and modelling.
