Proven System Construction Technology: Development of Dispensers and Modular Hydrogen Refueling Stations
The Korean proverb “Even if you dig a well, focus on one” emphasizes that true success comes from dedicating yourself fully to a single goal. Taking on too many tasks at once can scatter focus and reduce effectiveness. However, the term “multiplayer” has recently become common even in everyday life. Unlike in the past, when companies sought success through a single core business, today many pursue growth through diversified ventures, confident that they can excel across multiple fields with their own unique strategies.
As the world moves toward a hydrogen-powered future, some companies are striving to become the best in a single specialized area. But others, like JEAENG Co., Ltd., are embracing the vision of becoming a “multiplayer” in the hydrogen industry—expanding their expertise across dispensers, water electrolysis BOP systems, liquefied hydrogen refueling stations, and P2G (Power-to-Gas) solutions.
JEAENG Possesses Intelligent Integrated Control System for Dispensers
Development of Dispensers by JEAENG
JEAENG was selected as a hydrogen-specialized company in May last year. In March this year, it secured a second round of investment through the Small and Medium Business Corporation, achieving a corporate valuation exceeding KRW 13 billion.
Notably, as a first-tier vendor for Hanwha Solutions and Hyundai Rotem, JEAENG is leading BOP engineering for water electrolysis systems essential to Hanwha Solutions’ P2G business and handling import licensing and factory registration for overseas electrolysis equipment. With Hyundai Rotem, JEAENG has successfully executed multiple joint projects, including the Samcheok hydrogen production base and bus hydrogen refueling stations, and continues to pursue joint bids this year. Moreover, the company made remarkable achievements as the first domestic participant in KEPCO’s P2G construction project.
JEAENG’s partnerships with large corporations are possible because it started with system construction expertise, allowing it to integrate both software and hardware—a capability unique among hydrogen companies. This advantage also facilitates rapid international expansion. Successful exports of hydrogen refueling systems could set a new benchmark in Korea’s hydrogen industry.
Participation in Hydrogen Refueling Station Performance Evaluation Device Development
JEAENG holds a patent for modular hydrogen refueling station technology and has signed technology development agreements with the Korea Environment Corporation and POSCO Plantec. In March 2022, the patent was filed. The modular stations integrate dispensers, chillers, and compressors into a single package, eliminating redundant functions. Basic design is complete, with pilot demonstrations scheduled for October this year. Testing with hydrogen will take place on a factory site provided by Samcheok City.
JEAENG also developed proprietary dispenser technology, commercialized in September last year. The product features an All-in-One PLC Integrated Control System, combining intelligent HMI-based operations, safety monitoring, and predictive diagnostics, providing scalable and differentiated performance.
In collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company’s Technical Research Center, JEAENG developed the control program at the heart of HyPAS, the third hydrogen refueling station performance evaluation device in the world after the US and Canada. HyPAS validates hydrogen refueling safety protocols, and JEAENG designed the control logic for over 50 evaluation items, developing SAE-J2601 evaluation modules and the HyPAS control system. Since 2022, Korea Gas Safety Corporation has implemented hydrogen refueling station performance certification, halting operation if standards are not met. JEAENG’s technologies are expected to contribute to the safety and quality of next-generation hydrogen stations and have export potential to countries like China and Japan.
Interview: CEO In-Gyu Park on Leading the Hydrogen Economy with Proprietary Technology
JEAENG was founded in 2018 to align with the emergence of the hydrogen industry and the changing energy paradigm. Within four years, the company has tripled its revenue and grown into a government-designated hydrogen-specialized company. CEO Park emphasized the company’s reliance on highly skilled personnel with extensive experience from leading corporations such as Hyosung Heavy Industries and Samsung Electronics.
“Among our various projects, obtaining European CE certification for our dispenser was particularly impressive,” said Park. He noted that while domestic dispensers exist, achieving overseas certification remains a challenge, and JEAENG’s capabilities are helping overcome this barrier.
Park highlighted regulatory challenges, particularly the lack of established KGS codes for liquefied and mobile hydrogen refueling stations, which hampers domestic construction and demonstration. He stressed the need for proactive code development to maintain technological competitiveness.
Since being selected as a hydrogen-specialized company in May last year, JEAENG has benefited from government support, but Park called for additional bonus point systems for hydrogen-specialized companies in R&D programs managed by agencies like the Korea Energy Technology Evaluation Institute. Such systems would foster company growth and promote hydrogen industry development.
Looking ahead, JEAENG aims to achieve KRW 100 billion in mid-to-long-term revenue through four core projects:
-
P2G water electrolysis BOP,
-
PRG modular system development,
-
European CE-certified dispenser for overseas export, and
-
Integrated operation systems for hydrogen refueling stations.
This year, JEAENG was also selected as the second hydrogen-specialized company for Gangwon Province’s regulatory-free hydrogen zone, focusing on hydrogen production from waste wood, demonstrating its ambition to be a true leader in the hydrogen industry.
