SULFUR MAGNET®-Filtered Hydrogen with 10 ppm H₂S Outperforms Pure Hydrogen in Nexceris Fuel Cell Study

Standard H2, Inc. Hall: B3 Stand: 3D15

Standard H2’s SULFUR MAGNET® and H2 FINAL FILTER deliver record-breaking fuel cell performance with the most sulfur-free hydrogen on Earth

COLUMBUS, Ohio – July 15, 2025 — Standard H2, Inc., a leading innovator in hydrogen purification technology, has released groundbreaking performance data from a recent fuel cell study conducted by solid oxide fuel cell developer Nexceris. The study tested hydrogen filtered through Standard H2’s SULFUR MAGNET®, revealing a stunning result: hydrogen containing 10 ppm H₂S—when purified with the SULFUR MAGNET®—outperformed Zero-grade 99.995% purity hydrogen in SOFC fuel cell operation.

The results shocked even seasoned researchers. Not only did sulfur-scrubbed hydrogen match pure H₂ performance, but it also exceeded it, achieving a peak cell voltage of 0.838V, compared to 0.836V from ‘pure’ hydrogen. More than 15 hours of testing, degradation remained negligible and nearly identical to the baseline, demonstrating long-term stability and robustness.

According to the report:

“The cell with a sulfur-containing feed that had been scrubbed with the SULFUR MAGNET® was outperforming the cell with what was believed to be pure hydrogen.”

The implications are profound:

  • Low-cost, technical-grade hydrogen—even with 10 ppm of H₂S—can outperform expensive ‘pure’ hydrogen when passed through the SULFUR MAGNET®.
  • Third-party testing confirmed that hydrogen filtered through the SULFUR MAGNET® contains undetectable levels of sulfur, even using the world’s most advanced detection instrumentation (view report).
  • H2 FINAL FILTER®, which integrates the most tenacious sulfur sorbent on earth, ensures that any hydrogen feedstock can be upgraded at the point of use, unlocking higher performance, system longevity, and reduced compliance risk.

“This proves you don’t need ultra-pure hydrogen to achieve ultra-high performance,” said James Wasas, Chief Science Officer at Standard H2, Inc. “Any hydrogen filtered through the SULFUR MAGNET® will outperform any grade of hydrogen.

With a global sulfur adsorbent market exceeding $600 million, $100 million of which is directly tied to fuel cells, Standard H2’s patented technology is redefining hydrogen purification economics, reliability, and performance.

About Standard H2

Standard H2, Inc. is clearing the air and water for a cleaner future. Standard H2 is on a mission to make the air we breathe and the water we use cleaner and safer. Its technology helps remove harmful pollutants, such as sulfur, nitrogen compounds, and long-lasting chemicals known as “forever chemicals,” that damage the environment and wear down critical systems.

Based in Ohio, Standard H2 is a clean tech company focused on ultra-pure hydrogen and advanced pollutant removal. Its standout solution, the SULFUR MAGNET®, functions like a high-powered sponge, trapping and eliminating hydrogen sulfide (a toxic gas) to incredibly low levels, less than 200 parts per trillion. That keeps fuel cells cleaner and extends their lifespan.

They also offer the H2FINAL FILTER®, which purifies hydrogen, natural gas, air, and water for use in various applications, ranging from clean transportation to high-tech manufacturing.

Whether hydrogen is made from electrolysis, natural gas, or emerging technologies like hydrogen mining, Standard H2’s filters help ensure it’s clean, safe, and ready for the future. Keeping harmful chemicals out of the environment it helps industries and the planet breathe a little easier.
