CO2 electrolysis: Sustainable chemicals from a greenhouse gas
)
Fraunhofer UMSICHT offers next-generation electrolyzer technolgy for CO2 conversion to chemical products. Our research focusses on developing and characterizing materials and components for the application in CO2 electrolyzers for production of carbon monoxide, formic acid / formate, ethylene and ethanol.
At the Hydrogen Technology World Expo we exhibit a CO2 electrolyzer stack capable of producing carbon monoxide at high pressures of up to 40 bar(g) enabling facile integration into downstream processes such as methanol or Fischer Tropsch synthesis.
The CO2 electrolyzer stack will be applied in a kg/h CO production scale in a pilot system including gas purification and CO2 recycle to allow for efficient CO2 conversion. Furthermore, testing capabilities from the lab (Watt- or g/h-scale) to technical pilot scale (kW or kg/h scale) with pressures between 1 and 120 bar(g) and temperatures from 20-80 °C.
