MAT4HY.NRW is a cooperation platform dedicated to advancing materials and technologies for the hydrogen economy. Bringing together universities, research institutes and industry partners across North Rhine-Westphalia, MAT4HY.NRW connects expertise along the entire value chain – from fundamental materials research and synthesis to component development, system integration and industrial application. The current partners are Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Westfälische Hochschule, ZBT - the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Center, IUTA e.V. - Institut für Umwelt & Energie, Technik & Analytik, Fraunhofer UMSICHT, HSW Materials GmbH, ProPuls GmbH, Direct Matter GmbH.
A key focus of MAT4HY.NRW is water electrolysis, a critical technology for the efficient and sustainable production of green hydrogen. The platform addresses major challenges in electrolyser development, including the reduction of critical and precious materials, improved efficiency and durability, scalable manufacturing processes, and the integration of innovative materials into electrochemical systems.
MAT4HY.NRW combines expertise in material synthesis, catalyst and electrode development, membrane electrode assemblies, electrochemical characterisation, water management and long-term system analysis. By linking these areas, the platform supports the transition from promising laboratory concepts to scalable technologies with industrial potential.
Beyond research, MAT4HY.NRW actively promotes collaboration between science and industry. Its network and cooperation formats provide companies with access to specialised expertise, research infrastructure and potential development partners, while enabling researchers to address application-oriented challenges and accelerate technology transfer.
At the conference, MAT4HY.NRW invites researchers, technology developers, manufacturers and industry stakeholders to connect, exchange ideas and explore opportunities for collaboration. Together, we aim to develop the materials and technologies needed to make future hydrogen systems more efficient, sustainable and economically viable.
